The story of Royal Dutch Shell started in the early 1900s with the decision of the UK and the Netherlands to cooperate in the petroleum sector. While the company was created in 1907 though the amalgamation of the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company and the UK's Shell Transport and Trading Company, it was not until nearly a century later, in 2005, that the two companies unified under one banner - Royal Dutch Shell plc.
Today, Shell is operating in more than 70 countries with over 92,000 employees, 43,000 filling stations, and serving more than 30 million customers daily. Shell's strategy seeks to reinforce its position as a leader in the oil and gas industry, while helping to meet global energy demand in a responsible way. Safety and environmental and social responsibility are at the heart of Shell's activities.
Operating in Türkiye since 1923, Shell is working continuously to lead the Turkish energy industry with its innovations and superior standards while contributing to the Turkish economy. Shell Türkiye also shares its technical and technological knowledge, its global experience in R&D and Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) with wider society.
In 2006, as part of an effort to strengthen its network of service stations and grow its operations, Shell founded Shell & Turcas Petrol A.Ş. with a 70 percent ownership stake in a joint-venture with one of the Turkish industry's long-established companies, Turcas Petrol. Shell & Turcas Petrol A.Ş. carries out retail fuel and lubricant and commercial fuel, lubricant and fleet activities, while other Shell companies in Türkiye run oil and gas exploration, aviation, chemicals, maritime, and energy trade activities.
Shell & Turcas serves more than 1 million customers a day through its network of over 1,000 service stations in Türkiye. Having maintained its leading position for 11 years in a row in the Turkish lubricants market, Shell & Turcas is also a leader in the Turkish gasoline and diesel fuel market and it is among the top exporters of Türkiye, exporting lubricants and grease to 57 countries from its production facility in Derince, Kocaeli.
Shell contributes not only to the Turkish economy, but also to its social and cultural development. It creates value for Türkiye by providing employment, by developing the capacity of its business partners, and through its social investment projects. Shell Türkiye has around 700 employees, including the employees of Shell & Turcas Petrol A.Ş., and the company indirectly provides employment for approximately 15,000 people.
